Because the only thing people need to know it’s that it is a Linux-based portable gaming PC made by Valve. Some games aren’t compatible yet, which can change as the software improves and developers opt in to ensure their games work. Time flew fast, like, it was July last year when Valve announced the Steam Deck and that shipment was supposed to happen in December - but the pandemic slowed things down so much, the Deck’s launch was delayed to February. One idea from senior game designer Jaakko Iisalo involved a simulated screenshot of limbless angry-looking birds. The staff liked the birds and elected to make a game around game, with inspiration from Crush the Castle (the gameplay) and the “swine flu” pandemic (the enemy pigs). It wasn’t until 2010 that the game began to be noticed: it reached No. 1 spot in the iOS App Store in the UK and US. Since then, Rovio continued to publish updates for the game alongside different iterations (like different settings or crossovers with other IPs). Any Nintendo player could duke it out with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Samus… all of Nintendo’s characters, plus some guest characters from other IPs. But because this is Nintendo, the players (and the organisers) were at odds with the company, until now. For EVO 2022 (the first tournament since 2019, for obvious reasons), Smash Bros won’t come back, with no explanation from Nintendo. Likely reasons are that Nintendo partnered with Panda Global to make the first officially licensed circuit for Smash Bros in America, or because half of EVO’s ownership is Sony.
